Winnebago County had about four times as many deaths from drug overdoses last year than from traffic crashes, which led to 10 deaths in 2021, according to a preliminary report by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. The deaths cut across demographics: men and women, young and old, many dying alone in their homes with nobody around to help, according to a report by the county’s overdose fatality review team, which has existed since 2018. In 2021, Winnebago County had a record number of fatal drug overdoses for the second year in a row: 41 people died, including eight in a single two-week period in November, up from 37 in 2020 and 20 in 2019.
